How I got started with IoT

For those of you who don’t know what Internet of Things is, think about a Terminator movie where machines have taken over the world and subtract the evil AI that wants to kill all humans (at least for now), and we have a world where all the devices you could imagine (cars, vending machines, planes, microwaves, fridges, lightbulbs, so on and so forth) are interconnected and sharing information about… well… everything, and taking ’smart’ decisions based on that information.

IoT refers to the interconnection of devices rather than people, communication between machines and the automation of certain actions based on the information this machines gather from themselves and from other nearby devices.

How can you benefit from IoT? Imagine yourself driving to home while a small device tells you the fastest route to get there…wait a minute… thats Waze, let me try again… Imagine yourself going to the gym and instead of having a personal instructor there is a device that tells you what to do, if your heart beat is too fast or too slow for some exercise it lets you know… ok that sounds like a Fitbit band. Imagine a city where the traffic lights switch with the sole purpose of reducing traffic jams based on real time information rather than a timer. Or just imagine the savings if machines tell you if they maintenance way before they stop working… if it is your car it may save your life, if it is your industry it may save you from stopping the operation to replace a faulty machine. I can think of a lot of examples… but I will leave it there for now.
Let me tell you how I started with IoT…
A little more of a year ago I paid for an IoT course that focussed on embedded systems. My expectations were very high because as an electronics engineer that works as an SAP NetWeaver Consultant I have learned about IT and how businesses work, which is good, but there is a part of me that yearns to go back to the lab and develop cool stuff, like a terminator. So IoT sounded like something that was tailored specially for me. However, my happiness plummeted to the ground before the end of the first class.
I’m not going to bore you with the ‘highlights’ of the course but i will tell you that the practical part of the course consisted in switching on/off LEDs with a button and connecting an Intel Galileo to Internet (this was an excruciatingly painful task that consisted mainly in changing IPs and DNS addresses in the “super friendly” linux terminal). after 4 weeks I asked for a refund.
I knew that there was much more to IoT and I could do a lot more on my own. Therefore, I decided to start my own IoT projects and learn how to do it on my own. Armed with my electronics engineer skills and my faithful raspberry pi (the best gift someone has ever given to me) I began this journey that has led me to write this blog that you are reading right now.

In my next entry I will explain my current project: a smart watering system for my bonsai.
